This monumental history painting, one of the most famous works by Paja Jovanović, was commissioned by the Kingdom of Serbia for the World’s Fair held in Paris in 1900. The painting features the coronation of Stefan Dušan as the Emperor of the Serbs, Greeks and Bulgarians in Skoplje on April 14, 1346. The idea to express the reminiscences of an important historical moment that exemplifies the magnificence of the Serbian medieval empire using artistic means perfectly fitted political ambitions of the restored Kingdom of Serbia. The painting shows Emperor Dušan with his family and Despot Oliver, who reads a charter, surrounded by noblemen and squires in medieval dress.
The original title Coronation of Emperor Dušan was changed in the 1950s to Proclamation of the Code of Emperor Dušan. More recently, there are art historians who use the original title. For that reason, both titles are equally common in literature.
