Mantle Clock (Directory Style)

Mantle Clock (Directory Style)

  • Date: Late 18th Century
  • Inventory number: LPP 19

The clock was made in France (apart from this one, there is only one known example of this model). Its casing, made of soft-paste porcelain adorned with a bas-relief in gilt bronze featuring a fruit harvest, rests on a brass base. The casing is topped with an Egyptian boat carrying a sitting half-nude black man with an arrow and bow in his hands and a quiver on his back. These exquisite works of applied art are the result of the combination of various styles during Classical Revival.
