A leaf from a sketchbook. The sketch was made for the painting Saint George Kills the Dragon. During the 1920s and 1930s, Paja Jovanović spent increasingly more time in the newly formed state of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and particularly in Belgrade. He was eagerly received and deeply respected at the royal court of the Karađorđević dynasty, whose members commissioned a number of paintings from him in these years. About 1927, during negotiations concerning the painted decoration of the chapel within the new royal court at Dedinje, Jovanović was offered to paint Saint George on a horse. A few years later, this painting was used as a model for the mosaic above the main entrance to the Oplenac Mausoleum.
