Đorđe Jovanović, often considered the most important Belgrade sculptor, was a professor of the Art School in Belgrade until World War I (1905–14). His sculptures are representative of realism in Serbian art. His works – portraits and public monuments – show great workmanship. Gentle modelling is a distinctive feature of his style. The sculpture A VICTIM OF WAR is one of his most famous works. It symbolizes Serbia's youth, and his son was one of them, whose future and life were destroyed by the war. Through a classical approach to the distribution of volumes, Jovanović shaped a half-nude female body, left behind on a rock. The rising line of composition suddenly begins to descend along the hip. The lifeless body tells the story through captured movement. This is a small-scale sculpture infused by the feelings of grief and terror stirred by war horrors.
