This red amphora with a cylindric neck and rich decoration in the form of meanders filled with pricks stands out among the similar vessels discovered at Vinča because of the quality of its artistic work. Eyes were sometimes represented on the neck of amphorae and pythoi, and this may have provided the basis for the making of prosopomorphic lids. Thus the entire vessel with the lid resembled a stylized human figure, evoking feelings of mysticism and awe. Such vessels, apotropaic in character, were probably used for the storage of food and special liquids, for seed for sowing, or for reserves of grain to be used in exceptional cases.
